Guys, I just want you to write about your favorite books in English or for studying English: maybe some text-books, dictionaries, booklets, classical and modern literature, poetry……… ??
As for me, I have loads of books. Recently I’ve bought a very interesting book “Hot dog” by M. Goldenkov and I can say for sure it’s really worth reading, if only to have fun:) I also like “Conversational English” (Advanced) by V. Voytenok and A. Voytenko though I just dipped into that book.

ok, i made myself feeling free... so, here we go...
i respect W.S. Maugham as the classic of literature. it was ok to read Robin Cook "Vector" though i found a couple of mistakes in his English. but it was easy to get it without a dictionary -- a lots of modern word's stuff which you can meet in modern "russian" language, you see?
my English is too poor and weak to read american classics, such as O.Henry, for example.
and i love special books devoted to idioms, sayings (russian and english with analogues of each other and so on). there are different ones.

Oh, yeah, Maugham is really good, at the moment I read The merry-go-round... but i think its languge is a little bit old...

It is, but it's still very good, especially for learners. As for me, I like Galsworthy, but he is pretty difficult to read.

It's very nice that you are intrested in books - my opinion is that books are great source of cultural information and tons of other stuff (blah-blah).
I've been reading "Not that ordinary boy" lately. Amazing stories from not that ordinary life. James St. James... Seen "Party Monster"??? Definate must see. So you can read it.
And what the point of reading english books by foreing writers? Drop me your adress - I'll send you some.

I think the primary benefit of reading English books (being a Russian in Russia) is that you learn how to write in English correctly. The more you read, the more you learn. All phrases, cliches and word combinations that you read and understand, all they remain in your memory. Of course, they mainly reside as "passive English", but eventually your passive english becomes active.

By the way, the very same process applies to native language. Being a 5-6-year boy, I have read TONS of books (mainly sci-fi). In school times, I always had excellent marks at Russian language lessons, and I did not learn *anything*, no rules, no exceptions, nothing. (Uhm, frankly speaking I had excellent marks at all other lessons too, but that required some efforts from my side). If one have read enough books, he just *knows* how to write correctly.

Of course, that was just my humble opinion

Ok, if you want text book, i prefer "English Grammary In Use", in my mind, the best text book. You'll be able to study yourself, without teachers or another help.

Seven months ago i dropped reading classics. and that was the right thing. you'd better read modern writers (there is a good selection in British Council ). "The Buddha in Suburbia" (Hanif Kureishi), "I Capture the Castle" (Dodie Smith), "She's Come Undone" (Wally Lamb) - i liked them most. i hope so will you.

maybe someone tell me where i can buy english books. i just can't find it. books shops sell only classical books.

You may look into DBC or INOTEXT shops, they sell modern authors. If you like thriller books I can recommend John Grisam (not sure about the spelling) novels - 'The Firm', "Pelican Brief" etc. The language of the novels is very good and up to date.
